Running a Pub Quiz

Planning - Before The Night …

Visit pubquiznights.co.uk and look at what a few other pubs/bars have written to promote their pub and their quiz nights. This will help you compose a few succinct paragraphs.
Decide which evening and at what time you are going to have your quiz. Try to avoid nights that may conflict with other events (e.g. live football/soccer unless, of course, you are going compliment other events by selecting a football/soccer, … quiz). As a guide, the recommended kit and FREE sample kit, presented as below, should take between 1 and 1½ hours.
Subscribe to pubquiz.biz, enter your pub and quiz night details and then visit the subscriber's area to acquaint yourself with the options and the simple processes involved in selecting and printing your quiz material. You do not need to select and print your first quiz yet. If you would like to see the layout, etc it is best to print off the FREE sample quiz first, but remember that when actually selecting, you will have many options including 'Topical Trivia' questions.
Inform all staff and customers of your plans and try to involve them in promoting your quiz night.
One week before your first quiz night, place posters advertising your quiz night; start time, etc in prominent areas both inside and outside your pub/bar. You want to attract new customers.
Decide if and how much you are going to charge to play and if so, per person or per team. We strongly recommend a small charge of £1/$2/3AUD per person as best practice. This results in the build up of a 'kitty', the reduction of claims of unfairness from smaller teams and also means that you do not need to break up a group of friends in to smaller groups.
Are you going to be comfortable being quiz master? If not, pressgang someone who will be or use pubquiz.biz 'Quizmasters' to help you find one.
If you have a PA system or karaoke you should use it for best effect.
The day before your first quiz visit pubquiz.biz and logon to your page. Visit the subscriber's area and make your selections. Remember, if you are going to have a picture quiz, for best results, place 1 sheet of photo quality paper as the top sheet in your printer and make sure to use 'question numbering' to number your questions from 11. Also you will probably need to print off your master copy of the answer sheet for your first night and when/if you change the number of questions in your quiz or if you change the title, e.g. "60's Pop Quiz".
Photocopy 1 copy of the picture quiz and 1 copy of the answer sheet for each team. On the first occasion you are better to copy too many rather than too few.
Read all quiz questions in private before you start. Identify difficult to pronounce words or names. This will help the quiz to run smoothly.

On The Night …

Position yourself, with picture quizzes and answer sheets, in a prominent position away from the till or any busy area. This will reduce congestion and background noise and will help avoid distractions for you when you are asking the questions.
As customers approach you, ask how many players are in their team? (Multiply that number by £1/$2/3UAD - see above). Offer a copy of the pictures and answer sheet to each team.
Each team should choose a name for their team and write it in the space at the top of the Quiz answer sheet. The answers to the picture quiz (if selected) will cover spaces for numbers 1 to 10 inclusive. The questions should cover spaces 11 and up.
Your customers should be trying to answer the picture quiz while you are handing out sheets to other customers. This gives a slight advantage to 'early birds'.
(The following assumes the 'FREE sample Quiz Kit' or similar. Exact announcements will vary according to your selection).
Announce "In five minutes we will start firing questions at you. Are your glasses full? We will be having a break, for topping-up of drinks, after question 30."
(You may choose to announce that the use of a mobile phone to friends will result in the deduction of 10 points from the team total. If their friend is that good, get them to come along!)
Announce " You should all have your answer sheets and the picture quiz. Use spaces 1 to 10 for the picture quiz answers. We will now start the next part. There are four sections, entertainment, sport, general knowledge and popular music. Each section has ten questions. In the event of a draw, the team captains of the drawing teams will be required to answer a tiebreaker question."
Then, start this section of the quiz with first question. "I will announce the number of the question first, then ask the question. I will repeat the question, then allow you about 1 minute to think and write your answer in the space next to the number for the question").
After each question allow a few seconds then repeat it.
After each section allow a few minutes for repeating any question, which might not have been heard clearly, and for 'thirsty' players to refill their glasses, etc!
Start each question by ticking it then read out the number then question. This reduces confusion.
Where appropriate start each section by reading out the category. This warns that the game is about to restart and alerts players to the fact that the category has changed.
After asking question number 50, allow teams about 5 minutes to check their answers, and then announce "please make sure that you have filled in your team name, then swap your sheet with another team for marking". Allow a minute or so.
Read out all picture numbers / questions followed by the answers allowing a few moments between each answer and the next question and, at the end, a few moments for teams to total up the scores and swap sheets back. It is important to read out the questions in full again as this will encourage late comers/non players to arrive early next week and play.
When you have provided all answers ask, "Does anybody have all 50 correct? 49? 48? 47? …" Allowing a few moments for teams to shout or indicate that they have the highest score.
You only need to check the answer sheet/s submitted by the team/s claiming to have the highest score. Award 1 point for each correct answer. Be consistent about what you accept as a correct answer. If you have a draw, take the captains of the drawing teams to one side and read out the tiebreaker question and ask them to write down their answer and hand it to you. The nearest to the correct answer is the winning team.
We recommend that the prize for the winning team be of low value - a bottle of wine, etc. You will find that winning the game is what they want and they will be happy!
If you are using the 'Stick or Twist' you will find the guide at the top of the question sheet. This is the best way to develop a loyal and regular following as people will stay until the very last question and will return the following week to see if their answer sheet is pulled out. This also enables you to build a substantial 'kitty' at no cost to yourself. There is no legal limit to the size of the kitty as this is a 'game of skill' not a 'game of chance'! (See 'Best practice ideas' for use).
